How does ICE gel work?

Don’t be afraid of foreign words, the principle is quite simple.

-1st phase
Hypothermic. Due to the evaporation of active ingredients (isopropyl-alcohol, menthol, eucalyptus, tea tree oil) the area where the gel has been applied is cooled by up to 5 degrees. The body responds by trying to defend itself against the cold and loss of heat by reflexively contracting blood vessels in the skin and muscles. This is termed local vasoconstriction. Blood flow is reduced. There is a reduction in swelling (oedema) and alleviation of pain, as the cooling effect acts as an analgesic.

-2nd phase:
Isothermic. The temperature stabilises. The body has the energy to defend itself against the cold. Blood vessels progressively dilate. This is termed vasodilatation. The body forces more and more blood into the hypothermic muscles.

-3rd phase:
Hyperthermic. Bloods vessels dilate to a maximum (local vasodilatation).Blood circulation increases by up to 300%. There is increased blood circulation (so-called active hyperaemia). Metabolism increases, muscle tone (tension) decreases.
